Ceramic Flute Workshop with Jenna Tong – (5/31/22 -6/2/22), 1-4PM

  • Note: You will also have lab time to glaze your flutes, once they have been bisque-fired

Price: $195 (glaze materials, tools and instruction included). Tools will also be available for purchase at Clay Studio.

Description: Clay wind instruments have been an important part of human civilization for thousands of years. From ancient China to Mesoamerica, they appear with various forms and functions throughout history. Ceramicist Jenna Tong will lead the class through the background of clay wind instruments, and introduce you to the Ocarina, Ring and Transverse styles of flute. Participants will have the opportunity to create and experiment with the different flute types, finishing 2 flutes to glaze and take home.

Once all students’ work has been bisqued, the class will have access to studio time to finish and glaze their work.

*This course is for all students and welcome to beginners!

Drop-in open studio hours will be available for this course: Students may use up to 5 additional studio hours to finish and glaze their work. Students are welcome to come in to Clay Studio during our Open Studio Lab hours to work independently on Sundays from 11AM-4PM, Mondays from 10AM-1PM, Tuesdays from 4PM-8PM, and Fridays from 10AM-1PM. Please note that Open Studio Lab hours are subject to change.

Instructor:  Jenna Tong

About your instructor: Jenna Tong (they/them) is a multimedia artist in ceramics, painting, print, digital art, and more. They had 5 years of ceramic experience in their hometown of Kenmore, Washington before coming to UCSB as a student and work trader at the Clay Studio where they continued to develop their skills in ceramic instrument-making and work that ranges from pieces with elegant swirling patterns, to sculptural creatures with friendly faces.
