Digital Handcraft

September 14 – November 14, 2023

Digital Handcraft is an educational exhibition that introduces visitors to the world of 3D printing. The show features a variety of examples that demonstrate key concepts and principles within digital fabrication to illustrate the versatility and potential of 3D printing technology available to ceramic artists today.

Visitors can witness the intricate processes involved when creating pieces using robotics and gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and materials utilized by contemporary makers.  While the objects and videos on display are aesthetically pleasing and interesting by their own right, the primary goal of the exhibition is to guide visitors through different digital workflow processes to gain insight into the ways in which this technology can be applied to different concepts.

The exhibit includes 3D prints in a variety of stages, including renderings, prototypes, models, and final prints. Concepts and techniques are demonstrated and explained using video, QR codes and web links. Looped videos feature time lapse recordings of forms being rendered on printers, as well as testimonials by world class makers discussing their process and views on digital fabrication in the arts & crafts.

Key concepts, such as modeling techniques, modeling software options, printer types, printing techniques, and different clay bodies and glazing methods are available to help familiarize viewers with the ever-expanding ecosystem of digital fabrication. Relevant vocabulary is introduced and explained, including but not limited to modeling terms, printing terms, slicing terms, and post processing treatments.  The exhibition inspires visitors to appreciate the craft that goes into 3D printing, and to better understand what is possible with this new medium.

Organized by Lynda Weinman and Joey Watson, Digital Handcraft is on display at Clay Studio of Santa Barbara from September 14th to November 14th, 2023.  Our opening reception is scheduled for September 14th from 5-7pm.
