We now offer outdoor clay pickup, drop-off and glazing services. Simply follow the steps below to ensure that you have a smooth and easy outdoor studio experience at the Clay Studio “Shed.”
Step 1 – Purchase Clay Online
Purchase clay and tools online via our online shop, and bring in your order number and name to the studio. We’ll have your order ready for an easy, no-contact pickup. Clay is available to pick up Wednesday through Sunday 12–4pm.
We require a kiln security deposit for those firing Cone 10 clay purchased outside of Clay Studio. Please ask a Clay Studio staff member for more information.
Step 2 – Create at Home
Make your work at home through one of our virtual classes or workshops (or work independently). Remember to sign and take pictures of EVERY PIECE. We recommend using the PotteryNotes app to maintain and organize your ceramic photos as well as keep track of the dates you are dropping off work.
Many of us live in homes that cannot easily be used as a clay studio due to lack of space, carpeting, dogs, you name it. However, handbuilding with clay can be easily done outside of your home as well. If you have a outdoor garden or patio space where you can set up a small table, working outside is not only possible but it can also be very pleasant. For those without outdoor space available, you can also try working in a public place such as a park or the beach. All you need is a blanket or something to sit on, a board or a piece of scrap wood to work on, some clay, a little water, and a basic tool kit. The world is your ceramic studio!
Take pictures working at home and be sure to tag @claystudiosb on Instagram.
Step 3 – Drop-off your Greenware for Bisque Firing
Bring in your greenware to Clay Studio during our hours (Wednesday–Sunday 12–4pm). Once you arrive, please wear a mask and maintain at least 6 feet from others. You will be prompted to measure your work onsite using our designated firing boxes and a staff member will ring you up for the bisque firing fee. Bisque prices are below:
The kiln shelf measuring boxes are the following sizes and prices:
- 12×24 inch kiln shelf, 6 inches tall: $15
- 12×24 inch kiln shelf, 8 inches tall: $20
- 12×24 inch kiln shelf, 10 inches tall: $25
Please make sure that ALL pieces are signed. Do NOT move others’ work on the bisque shelf. Please ask for assistance if you need more space. Please check our newsletter regularly for firing updates.
Step 4 – Glaze
Glazing is available outdoors for one person at a time Wednesday–Sunday, 12–4pm. Please make an appointment to glaze using the calendar system at the BOTTOM of this page. Appointments are available in hour increments. You may register for multiple hours if available (please note this calendar system does not allow you to make multiple appointments at once). You MUST make an appointment before coming to the studio to glaze. Please do not bring any guests with you – for the safety of our staff we are limiting the glazing area to ONE at a time.
If you know you will need to cancel your appointment, please do so at least 48 hours in advance the bottom of your glazing appointment confirmation email. It is crucial that you cancel as your spot will then become available to someone else.
When you are ready for the glaze fire, you will measure your work onsite using our designated firing boxes and a staff member will ring you up for the glaze firing. You will then place your work on the glaze shelf.
Prices for glaze firing are below:
- 12×24 inch kiln shelf, 6 inches tall = $35
- 12×24 inch kiln shelf, 8 inches tall = $45
- 12×24 inch kiln shelf, 10 inches tall = $55
Please check our newsletter regularly for firing updates.
Step 5 – Pick up Your Finished Work
Pick up your work from Clay Studio from Wednesday–Sunday, 12–4pm. As a reminder, please check our newsletter for updates for recent firings. We hold work for 3 months after it’s fired and then it will be donated.
