Kitchen Trivets with Sgraffito Techniques

Date: Saturday, May 15

Time: 10am-12pm

Levels: All ages and levels welcome

Price: $80

Instructor: Ruby Mandell

Description: Explore the subtractive technique of sgraffito under the cover of our mature oak tree. We will use various slips (liquid clay) and carving implements to create pattern, design & imagery through positive and negative space. The surface of a kitchen trivet makes a wonderful space for exploration and discovery while simultaneously creating a usable object for your home. Each participant will make one kitchen trivet (to fit under a pot or pan in the kitchen).

About the instructor: Ruby Mandell graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art from UCSB in 2020 with an emphasis in sculpture and printmaking. While at UCSB, Ruby taught beginners wheel throwing to students and adults. She has been working in ceramics since 2015, with an interest in slip trailing as surface decoration on most of her work. Taking inspiration from oriental rugs, henna designs, tile patterns and her natural surroundings, she creates intricate decorations on the surfaces of her pieces.
