Exploring Nerikomi – Thursday Mornings with Reena Bajaj (6/8 – 7/13), 10:00 AM- 1:00 PM

Dates: Thursdays, June 8th – July 13th (6 weeks)

Price: $360 (glaze, a combination of B Mix, Dark Brown, and Amador clay, firing, instruction and drop-in open studio time included). Tools ($20 + tax) and additional clay ($15-$35 per 25 lb bag) available for purchase at Clay Studio.

Description:  In this class, students will learn how to combine different colored clays to create their own unique patterns using a Japanese technique called nerikomi. Nerikomi is the layering of different clay bodies to create patterns that appear similar to the fabric of ikat weavings. With these patterned clay bodies, students will be encouraged to explore making simple hand built functional ware with a beautiful and unique decorative flair. Age 18+.

This course is suitable for: This course is suitable for experienced beginners, and intermediate students who have previous knowledge of handbuilding techniques.

Recommended prerequisite classes: At least one Introduction to Wheel Throwing class (the more experience, the better)

Additional Tools Required by Students: Thin cotton dishcloth (for rolling out combined slabs)

Drop-in open studio hours will be available for this course: Students are welcome to come in to Clay Studio during our Open Studio Lab hours to work independently on Sundays from 11AM-4PM, Mondays from 10AM-1PM, Tuesdays from 4PM-8PM, and Fridays from 10AM-1PM. Please note that Open Studio Lab hours are subject to change.
